Explosions in Beirut: how did you react?

Discovery of the first animal fossil in a gem opal

An international team led by scientists from the Isterre laboratory / OSUG (UGA-CNRS-USMB-IRD-Université Gustave Eiffel) studied the first animal fossil contained in a gem opal from Indonesia. Oceanic mercury concentrations on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar decreased between 1989 and 2012

This is the result obtained thanks to the collaboration of the Geochemistry team of ISTerre, Ifremer (French Institute for the Sustainable Exploitation of the Sea) and CNR (Italian National Research Council). These results suggest that regulations to reduce anthropogenic Hg emissions have had a positive effect on Hg contamination in parts of the marine environment.
