Project description

Landslide reactivation phases are difficult to forecast. The non-linear behaviour of landslides, where quiescence periods alternate to reactivation phases, is a challenge for continuous monitoring. The emplacement of monitoring networks often occurs after initiation of displacements has begun, causing an incomplete analysis of precursors. This project aims at verifying the potential for an integrated strategy that makes use of active, wireless accelerometers capable of transmitting data in real-time and the extraction of key indicators from satellite data, using satellite-based synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry (InSAR) with corner reflectors. Being able to capture and understand key deformation patterns that prelude important acceleration failures might open up the path for future predictive abilities of satellite data. This, in turn, might allow for the detection of new incipient instabilities, not yet monitored with in-situ systems.
