The energy transition requires the construction of new infrastructures for the production, storage, transport and use of energy, which consume numerous "basic" raw materials and rarer substances. The production of these raw materials requires large quantities of energy, making the raw materials and energy challenges inseparable. The move towards low-carbon energies must also take place against a backdrop of strong growth in demand (rapid emergence of developing countries, growing urbanization and new technologies). Dynamic modeling of couplings between reserves, primary production, economics, energy and recycling is therefore essential to anticipate constraints. The DyMEMDS model (Dynamic Modelling of Energy and Materials Demand and Supply), built at ISTerre, maps the entire value chain from extraction of resources from the earth's crust to the satisfaction of human needs. In the future, it is intended to become a reference model for studying polycrisis - "a single macro-crisis of irremediable and interconnected failures of the Earth's vital natural and social systems, irreversibly degrading the prospects of humanity" - based on a physical rather than an economic foundation.
