Unveiling active faults in a diffuse plate boundary: The Alboran Sea (Western Mediterranean)

The present-day crustal deformation in the Alboran Sea is driven by the NW-SE convergence (4-5 mm/yr) between the African and Eurasian plates. The related deformation is distributed over a wide zone characterized by low to moderate seismic activity; however, large destructive earthquakes (Mw ≥ 6.0) have also occurred in the area (e.g. 1522 Almeria, 1804 and 1910 Adra, 1994 and 2004 Al-Hoceima, 2016 Al-Idrissi). During the last fifteen years we have carried out successive marine geological and geophysical cruises in the Alboran Sea that have allowed us to identify, map, characterize and evaluate the seismic and tsunami potential of the main active faults in the region, such as the Carboneras, Al-Idrissi, Alboran Ridge and Yusuf fault systems. The dataset used to carry on this work has been obtained in the frame of different research cruises (i.e., IMPULS 2006, EVENT-SHELF 2009, EVENT-DEEP 2010, TOPOMED-GASSIS-2011, SHAKE-2015 and STRENGTH 2023) on board the Spanish RV Hespérides, RV García del Cid and RV Sarmiento de Gamboa. Multiscale bathymetric (hull mounted to AUV mounted echosounders), reflection seismic (parametric, sparker to airgun) and wide angle seismic data, together with sediment cores compose the available dataset. The aim of the seminar is to provide you with an overview of the current knowledge we have about the active faults in the Alboran Sea.
