The rotational flows continuously driven by electromagnetic forcing of an electrolytic fluid in the gap of a concentric spheres setup are studied experimentally and theoretically in the laminar regime. The flows are driven by the interaction of an electric current injected radially at ring electrodes located at the equator and a dipolar magnetic field. Depending on the electromagnetic forcing configuration and the differential rotation of the spheres, different flow structures can be observed. Experimentally, velocity profiles were obtained with piv and udv. Even though the flows are three-dimensional (3D), under some assumptions, they can be mathematically modeled with one-dimensional analytical solutions. Additionally, full 3D numerical simulations are also obtained. The analytical solutions reproduce qualitatively the experimental profiles, whereas the numerical solutions reproduce quantitatively the experimental measurements.
