Rock glaciers are very characteristic landforms in mountainous areas and are indicators for the occurrence of permafrost. Recently, in the French Alps, glacier retreat and permafrost thaw have led to destabilization of slopes, threatening human infrastructure and inhabitants. Based on remote sensing data we were able to investigate and quantify morpho-dynamic changes and understand their evolution. We used historical aerial images since 1950 to estimate displacement rates and mass changes. In combination with geophysical data, we proposed a new methodology for quantifying rock glacier mass balances. Our results highlight, firstly, the impact of climate drilling on permafrost and how its changes become important, but also the importance of observation from different methodologies. Currently, we are working on the exploitation of massive remote sensing data (InSAR and optical) to describe the spatio-temporal patterns of permafrost evolution.
