Interpreting seismic tomography models is complicated by model uncertainties and uneven resolution. The recently introduced SOLA Backus-Gilbert tomographic inversion offers several advantages over standard methods: SOLA models are accompanied by resolution and uncertainty information, on which we have some direct control. The motivation of this work is to apply the SOLA inversion to surface wave data to improve the interpretation of small-scale three-dimensional velocity anomalies imaged in the Pacific upper mantle. First the SOLA inversion is applied within the framework of ray theory to produce two-dimensional models at discrete depths, then within the framework of finite frequency theory to produce fully three-dimensional models.
