Real time earthquake magnitude and location estimation: Potential and pitfalls of deep learning

Precise real time estimates of earthquake magnitude and location are essential for early warning and rapid response. In this talk, I'll discuss a novel deep learning approach for real time assessment, TEAM-LM, which is flexibile with regard to the underlying seismic network configuration. I evaluate the model on three large scale datasets from Chile, Italy and Japan. On average, the model strongly outperforms traditional fast assessment methods. However, in relevant corner cases, e.g., large magnitude events or offshore events, systematic mispredictions occur. I'll show how these issues can be traced back to insufficient training data and how their impact can be reduced.
